智利北部外海當地時間星期四晚上，發生規模8.3的強烈地震，主震過後，餘震不斷，有四起規模在六以上，目前已知至少兩死，其中一人是被倒塌的房舍壓死，據報導，聖地牙哥北方、一個名叫（伊亞佩爾）的內陸城市，有部份磚造房屋倒塌。

智利位處全球地質最不穩定的地區，納茲卡板塊與南美板塊，就在它的海岸外交錯，人類有史以來規模最強的地震，就發生在智利，1960年的一起規模9.5地震，造成五千多人死亡。

地震發生在當地時間星期三晚上七點54分，震央在聖地牙哥北北西方、距離聖地牙哥228公里的地方，震源深度有一說指只有五公里，也有報導說是33公里。
